Smallville is based on the wildly popular DC superhero Superman's early life before he became the Man of Steel. It is set in a fictional town called Smallville, Kansas, where he grows up as a teenager. Smallville was created by Miles Miller and Alfre Gough, who originally pitched the idea of a young Bruce Wayne (Batman) to Warner Bros. TV. While that idea didn't fly, the idea of a young Superman drew a lot of interest.
Smallville revolves around the life of Clark Kent as a high school student in Smallville. The series includes many characters, including his friends from high school and his complicated love story with Lana Lang, his next-door neighbor. The series also introduces Lex Luthor, the quintessential nemesis to Superman, who is actually his friend at the time.
Season 5 onwards, the show was focused on Clark Kent's early adult years, as he sets out to make a career at the Daily Planet along with his coworker and future wife, Lois Lane. The series subsequently introduces many of the famous characters from the Superman series and the DC Arrowverse.
The first four seasons of Smallville were broadcast on the WB, but after WB and UPN merged to form the CW, seasons five to ten were broadcast on the CW. The First Episode of the series was aired on 16th Oct '01, and the last episode of Season 10 was aired on 13th May '11.
At the end of Smallville's last season on the air, it was announced that Smallville Season 11 would continue the Smallville story in a new and very exciting format: Smallville season 11 episodes.
It will be run as a combination of printed comic books and digital releases through apps and online.
For the main story arc, Smallville Season 11 episodes would be released through digital mediums on every Friday for the first three weeks. In the fourth week, a print comic would come out on the Wednesday of the week, combining the story arc of the first three chapters, and giving it a fitting closure.
The digital chapters of the story arc were first introduced after the third main story of Smallville Season 11, which was "Haunted." The idea of these digital chapters was to enhance the universe and bring in more characters into the primary story arc. These digital chapters ran in parallel to the main story that was running on the print side of Smallville Season 11.
Each set of digital chapters was only four chapters long, and it was running alongside the print story arc, which meant it was a different story altogether, but it was on the same timeline as the other one (for example, the "Effigy" parallel story ran alongside the "Haunted" main story)
While originally the Small Season 11 Episodes were expected to be run purely in the digital side of the season, on 8th Feb '13, it was announced that the "Effigy" chapter was also released as a print comic book as a Special edition.
After this, the model was changed to accommodate the sets of four chapters as specials to be released in print form. Smallville Season 11 ended with the "Hollow" parallel story and the "Olympus" main arc in 2013.
Smallville Season 11 actually exists and continues to this day, since it was announced in 2013 that Season 11 would continue on through a set of miniseries that will carry on the print and digital format of the original Smallville Season 11 series.
Though it was also announced that the Season 11 moniker would no longer be used (for example, Season 11 Episode 3: Alien became Smallville: Alien), many of the covers of the miniseries that followed still carried "Season 11 continues" on them, which means that in a way they are still considered to be part of Smallville Season 11. The print titles also continue to use the Smallville Season 11 name, while the digital ones no longer use it.
The big question on everyone's mind after Smallville took a very different route for Smallville Season 11 was will Smallville return for Season 11 on TV? Over the years, there has been a lot of speculation among fans about if and when this is going to happen. However, till today, no mention of this has been made by either the CW or any of the stars of the original show.
The latest good news for Smallville Season 11 fans was when Tom Welling, the much-acclaimed original star of the Smallville series, renewed his role as Superman in a cameo on the Arrowverse crossover story "Crisis on infinite earths" that aired in 2019.
The fans gave a very positive response to his return to the screen as Superman, and this has given rise to a lot of speculation and talk about Smallville Season 11 resuming on TV.
In June 2021, Tom Welling announced on Cameo (video shout-out app) that he and his fellow star Michael Rosenbaum are currently creating an animated series spinoff based on the Superman story arc from the original Smallville series.
While no further details have come out after that, fans are hopeful that the two will emerge with a great follow-up on Smallville Season 11 and renew one of the most beloved versions of the Superman series.
Smallville season 11 starts off from where the TV series left off in Season 10. Clark Kent has finally donned the mantle of Superman and wore his famous red and blue dress with a cape while fighting Apokolips and saving the earth.
From there on, Smallville Season 11 Episode 1 talks about Superman's journey as he finally begins to embrace his identity, what it means to be a superhero, how he can help others in times of need, and how sometimes being a superhero is not all that it is cut out to be.
At the same time, the episode also talks about how the people of Smallville and the rest of the world are coming to terms with the existence of aliens, and especially the one living amongst them as their protector and savior.
Episode 1 starts off like an explosion in outer space that jeopardizes the International space shuttle but is quickly stabilized by Superman. Lex Luthor makes his entry back as a doubting Thomas who believes that if Superman is so powerful that he can move a planet out of its orbit, then the earth needs protection against him as well.
He tries to convince Lois's father to put up the Guardian satellite in an attempt to keep Superman in check. This sets up the basic plot for the first episode, with the last piece being the continuing visions that Superman is getting of Tess Mercer.
Towards the end of Episode 1, Chapter 1, Green Lantern is saved by Superman while fighting some criminals, and Superman comes to know that the space station mishap happened because a spaceship came down to earth in that explosion.
