Smallville is based on the wildly popular DC superhero Superman's early life before he became the Man of Steel. It is set in a fictional town called Smallville, Kansas, where he grows up as a teenager. He tries to convince Lois's father to put up the Guardian satellite in an attempt to keep Superman in check. This sets up the basic plot for the first episode, with the last piece being the continuing visions that Superman is getting of Tess Mercer.

Towards the end of Episode 1, Chapter 1, Green Lantern is saved by Superman while fighting some criminals, and Superman comes to know that the space station mishap happened because a spaceship came down to earth in that explosion.
